The 7th International Conference on Sustainable Development of Water and Environment, which lasted for two days, was successfully held in Xiamen, China from August 16-18, 2024. This conference focus on key themes such as climate change and water security, microplastics in freshwater ecosystems, sustainable groundwater development, transboundary water conflicts and cooperation, and environmental impact of desalination.
The program featured 3 keynote speakers and 3 invited speakers, who shared cutting-edge research and insights in the field of water and environment. Every presenter performed a good presentation and takes an active in share and discussion.
We would like to thank all participants and speakers for their invaluable contributions, which played a crucial role in the success of this event. We are excited about the prospects of seeing you at upcoming ICSDWE conferences.

Prof. Teik-Thye Lim | Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore

Speech Title: Hybrid Oxidation-Separation Technology Incorporating Catalytic Membrane for Intensified Micropollutant Degradation
Bio: Dr. Teik-Thye Lim is a Professor in environmental engineering at the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He is a research cluster leader in the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) at NTU. Dr. Lim has engaged in pioneering R&D endeavors centered on environmental technologies tailored for water treatment and reclamation, environmental nanotechnology for pollution abatement, waste-to-energy conversion, resource reclamation, and assessment and remediation of contaminated sites. Through his innovative work, he aims to offer sustainable solutions to the pressing environmental challenges confronting humanity. At NTU, he has led or co-led numerous research initiatives, securing a cumulative funding exceeding US$16 million. His groundbreaking inventions have resulted in the filing of 16 intellectual properties, including PCT patents and technology licensing agreements. Dr. Lim has played diverse roles in the water and environmental industry, serving as a consultant, advisor, technology assessor, trainer, mentor to startups, and member of technical and working committees shaping industry standards and practices. He has published over 240 journal papers and book chapters, with Scopus citation count of 19,000 and h-index of 75. Beyond his academic pursuits, Prof. Lim extends the reach of his water treatment technologies to provide safe drinking water to underserved communities in Asia, exemplifying his commitment to alleviating real-world societal impact.




Prof. Abdul Latif Ahmad | University of Science Malaysia, Malaysia

Speech Title: Imperative Technologies Towards Sustainable Treatment of Aquaculture Wastewater
Bio: Prof. Ir. Dr. Abdul Latif has served as the Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering (2005-2010), Research Dean (2010-2012), Director of Nexus Engineering (2017-2019) and Board of Governance (2022-2023) at Universiti Sains Malaysia. Virtually, he is the Head for Membrane Science and Technology Cluster at USM. He obtained his BEng, MSc and PhD from the University of Wale, Swansea, UK. Being a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow to The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) UK, he is frequently being appointed by IChemE to accredit Chemical Engineering Program in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. He also has served as an evaluator for numerous national and international research grants. He is an internationally renowned and acclaimed award-winning researcher in membrane science and technology. His enthusiasm and dedication towards his research works have been reflected in his achievements in winning numerous scientific invention awards, including Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (2006), 20th Khwarizmi International Award by the Iranian Ministry of Science and Technology (2007), Novel Engineering Solution (NES) Award by the IChemE UK (2008), TWAS Prize in Engineering Sciences, Italy (2012), Rotary Research Gold Medal Award by the Rotary Club Kuala Lumpur (2012) and Merdeka Award by the Government of Malaysia (2014). To-date, a total of 60 personal achievement awards and 69 research product awards have been won. His active participation in scientific research has also been exhibited by being the recipient of multiple research grants in various disciplines sponsored by government and nongovernment bodies, with a cumulative value of more than RM 35 million. His capability in carrying out quality research work of international standard has been further supported by publication of almost 553 articles in indexed refereed journals. With current cumulative citation number of 25,995 and H-index of 75, he is one of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Mind and Highly Cited Researcher in 6 years in a row (2017-2022), a recognition given by Clarivate Analytics. As tenacious educator, he has successfully graduated 58 PhD and 84 MSc students and currently on-going 13 PhD and 1 MSc.




Prof. Guangwei Huang | Sophia University, Japan

Speech Title:Watershed Management in Aging Society
Bio:Dr. Huang is a Professor at Sophia University, Japan, and currently serves as the Dean for the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies. He received BSc from Fudan University, China, Master and Doctoral degrees from the University of Tokyo.
Before joining Sopha in 2011, his career included Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo, Kanazawa University, and Niigata University, and Professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies. From 2015 to 2022, he was the Director of the Institute for Studies of the Global Environment, Sophia University. Passionate about water environment, his study has evolved from fluid dynamics to water quality modeling and monitoring, urban flood risk analysis and management, and further to integrated watershed science and management. In recent years, his main research focus has been sustainability science from a water perspective, such as wetland conservation and wise use, flood vulnerability and resilience analysis, and environmental impact assessment. Wording differently, he uses water as a nexus to link the three pillars of sustainability. In 2019, he received an award of distinguished scientist from International Society for Environmental Information Sciences (ISEIS). Currently, he is the Editor in Chief for International Journal of Global Environmental Issues. At this conference, he will deliver a talk about integrated watershed management for contributing to the achievement of SDGs.




Assoc. Prof. Jian Zuo | Singapore Institute of Technology, Singapore

Speech Title:Hybrid Membrane Processes for Metal Containing Wastewater Treatment
Bio:Dr Zuo received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from National University of Singapore, where his research focused on cutting-edge membrane technologies. His expertise spans a range of areas, including membrane processes, membrane formation, hollow fiber spinning, transport mechanisms, and water treatment. He has made significant contributions to the field, inventing several membranes for applications such as pervaporation and membrane distillation. Recognized for his outstanding work, Dr. Zuo has received prestigious accolades, including the World Future Foundation Award in Environmental and Sustainability Research. His achievements extend to being featured in the Forbes magazine "30 Under 30 Asia List" in recognition of his impactful contributions to the field of membrane technologies.
Beyond his research accomplishments, Dr. Zuo possesses extensive knowledge and experience in chemical engineering, specifically in process design, unit operations, process analytical technology, and system optimization. Currently serving as an Associate Professor at the Singapore Institute of Technology, he collaborates closely with industry partners, addressing challenges in liquid-liquid separation, wastewater treatment, desalination, and resource recovery, as well as developing membrane process for sustainable food production.




Assoc. Prof. Xuezhi Wang | Anhui Agricultural University, China

Speech Title:Supplementation of O2-containing Gas Nanobubble Water to Enhance Methane Production from Anaerobic Digestion of Cellulose
Bio:Dr. Wang earned his PhD in Sustainable Environmental Studies from the University of Tsukuba. His expertise spans diverse fields such as agricultural and forestry waste resource utilization, urban waste management, and biogas residue composting. He has pioneered the application of nanobubble technology to enhance anaerobic microorganisms for straw treatment. Beyond his research accomplishments, Dr. Wang possesses extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in water treatment, particularly in process design, equipment operation, process analysis technology, and system optimization. His innovative use of aerobic granular sludge for treating domestic sewage containing highly concentrated plastic particles underscores his impactful contributions. Currently serving as an associate professor at Anhui Agricultural University, Dr. Wang collaborates closely with industry partners to tackle challenges in wastewater treatment and solid waste resource recycling. His work continues to bridge the gap between academic research and practical applications in environmental sustainability.
